The past couple weeks have been such a whirlwind, and a very exciting time for me, my career, and my blog! I have a couple announcements today, and hope you’ll join me in a much needed celebration!!
If you know me personally and/or if you’ve been keeping up with the blog, you probably know by now that I’m super obsessed with my job! In Vegas a couple weeks ago, I had just landed and met with my girl friends to head to the Cosmo hotel. Then my boss texted me that I earned a promotion and it was approved that day!! Needless to say, it was a very exciting way to start the trip. So I thought I’d take this time to give my advice on how to ask for a promotion at work.
- Know the difference between EARNING a promotion and feeling ENTITLED to one. Corporate America doesn’t owe you anything. Or if you’re a teacher, a nurse, government official, etc., I would probably say the same. Going through an entire career doing only what is asked is not the way to climb to the top, even if you’re doing it well. Did you go the extra mile? Have you offered to take some tasks off your boss’s or coworkers’ plate? Have you had a positive attitude in the work place? Are you participating in and/or organizing team building activities? Do you give constructive feedback on how to make the organization better? Do you strive to exceed your metrics, whatever they may be? Have you discussed your career goals with your manager or Director? Just because the job description may have said you could move up within 6 months, a year, etc. doesn’t mean everyone will. Reflect on why you feel you’ve earned a promotion. And then…
- Write everything down. One time at the beginning of my career I made a list of the Top 20 reasons why I felt like I should be promoted and submitted it to my boss. Having all my accomplishments and extra efforts laid out in front of him led us to a constructive discussion about my career trajectory, how to improve in my current position, the appreciation of my work, etc.
- You’ll never know if you don’t ask. What’s the worst that can happen?! They’ll just say no, and maybe if you can find out why then you can also develop a plan for improvement. Ask for time frames. Ask for how you can progress in certain areas. The promotion will rarely ever just be handed to you, you need to ask for it!
Like To Know It
For those of you who have been asking when you can start shopping my Instagram (@dress_well_travel_often) via Like To Know It, today is the day!! Reward Style (the company that powers Like to Know It) invited me to join and I’m so excited for what it means for my blog, brand collaborations, monetization, analytics, etc.
If you have NO IDEA what the heck I’m talking about.. let me break it down for you! Like to Know It is a tool for Instagram users to directly shop their favorite bloggers’ looks. All you have to do is sign up with your email and Instagram handle. So let’s say you’re browsing through a blogger’s photos (like mine!) and you think to yourself, “OMG I NEEEEEED that sweater!” All you have to do is “like” her picture, and then within a couple minutes you’ll receive ready to shop product links to your email. Bloggers link everything from their outfits, shoes, jewelry, to their lipsticks, hair styling products, home decor items, etc.
It’s gold for gift guides with the holidays coming up, as many bloggers (including myself!) make collages with multiple items that they’ve deemed worthy for gift-giving. All you’d have to do is like the picture, and then get all the gift items to your email address so that you can shop them from the different websites at your leisure.
Don’t worry, you can always change your Like to Know It settings if you only want to receive emails once a week, once a day, etc. I personally want them ASAP, but it can fill your inbox quickly. Make sure to update your settings with your preferences!
On the phsyical Like To Know It website, when you log in you can also filter to “My Likes” so that you can see everything you’ve liked on one thread. Easiest way to indulge in an online shopping spree if you ask me!! In addition, there’s a section titled “Featured” where reward Style chooses featured looks that bloggers have posted that day. This is a good way to discover new bloggers, get fashion inspo, and shop more items.
Coming Soon to the Blog
With these new functionalities that I now have access to, I will be adding some new sections to the blog! I’ve already told y’all here my ideas for gift guides coming up. Soon you will be able to shop my Instagram feed directly from a tab on the blog as well. So stay tuned!!!
I also just want to thank everyone that helped me get to this point. First of all, good quality photos and content are important in being considered for reward Style, so I want to thank Madison at Madison Katlin Photography, Rebecca at Beckley & Co, Ashley at Ashley Kay Photography, Lauryn Feil, and Sally from Murphy and Grace! I also want to thank Brooke Burnett from One Small Blonde and her media company, Muse Media for designing my website and conducting a very informative blogger workshop.
Additionally, my boss Justin designed DWTO’s amazing logo out of the kindness of his heart. I am SOOO grateful for that. He designed 13 logos for me.. which goes above and beyond the effort I ever asked him to put in! We went back and forth many times with revisions until we got to the one I have now. He’s a whiz at graphic design and I’m indebted to him probably forever haha! Lastly, none of this could be possible without the support of my parents, sisters, friends, boyfriend, followers, and subscribers!
I’m so excited for what’s to come. Thanks for celebrating with me and continuing on this journey together for life, liberty, and the pursuit of shoes!
