What a weekend! As most of y’all know, my sister graduated from SMU’s Cox School of Business this Saturday and my family and I couldn’t be prouder! Over the course of the last 4 years, lots of terrible things happened, most of which I don’t feel like sharing on the blog. (Also they’re not my stories to share). Graduating on time is a huge achievement, and I’m so excited for where life takes sissy!
On Friday we attened Nayla’s Baccalaureate service. We aren’t Methodist, but SMU is a Methodist university so the day before graduation they have a ceremony where a minister blesses the students on their journey. It’s all very traditional and symbolic!
Saturday morning we had commencement, which is where all SMU graduates, including graduate and doctoral students, come for a ceremony together with a guest speaker. The speaker for the class of 2017 was Francis S. Collins, who is best known for his leadership on the Human Genome Project and is currently the Director of the Institute of Health for the federal government. He has served under George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and currently with Donald Trump. His speech was easily the best commencement address I’ve ever heard. I think the rest of the audience agreed because he got a five minute standing ovation! When does that ever happen at graduations?! Literally never.
Dr. Collins addressed a lot of of important points, but my favorite was when he told the graduates that life doesn’t owe them a smooth path. He talked about being lost in his career and faith and finding his way back. He even sang a song with his guitar to the tune of “I Did It My Way” which was incredible.. you can watch the full commencement speech here if you want!
After commencement was the Cox School of Business graduation where Nayla walked across the stage. We had family and friends drive in and I’d like to think she had the loudest applause/screams in the facility, haha! We took a bunch of pictures, enjoyed the Cox reception, then went back to my sister’s apartment for a few drinks before heading to Meddlesome Moth for dinner. They customized a printed menu for her which was really sweet! My personal favorite menu item was the mussels. Dad was poking fun at my mom and aunt, saying that they wanted to bathe in the mussel sauce. They were cooked in some sort of garlic broth and let me just tell you.. some of the best mussels I’ve ever had!
Sunday everyone joined us at the house for a light breakfast before heading to Mitas Hill Vineyard for brunch! The weather was beautiful, the view was lovely, and the company even more so. We ordered family style: the greek salad, the Mitas Hill salad, the meat lovers pizza, the mushroom pesto pizza, the 3 cheese pizza, and OF COURSE wine and s’mores! Overall it was an amazing weekend!
I hope y’all are geared up for a productive week! Be on the lookout for a Work Wear Wednesday post coming to the blog in a few days!
